The economic impact of luxury tourism in Mallorca triples its volume weight.
26/05/2026
Essentially Mallorca presented, together with the Universitat de les Illes Balears and the Conselleria de Turisme of the Govern de les Illes Balears, a study on the economic impact and circularity of the luxury segment in the Balearic Islands.
The event analysed how luxury tourism contributes to the destination from different perspectives. It focused on economic value, sustainability, local product, employment, culture and circular economy. Therefore, the study reinforces an important idea for Mallorca: luxury tourism is not only about expenditure, but also about long term value.
Luxury tourism in Mallorca as a driver of economic impact
According to the study, the economic impact of luxury tourism in Mallorca triples the weight of its volume. In 2025, 7.84% of tourists staying in hotels chose 5 star establishments. However, the economic contribution of this segment is much higher than its share of visitors.
The data shows that 27.3% of the total expenditure of foreign tourists in Palma corresponds to luxury tourism. In addition, around 27% of non resident spending is linked to this segment. As a result, the estimated impact in the Balearic Islands reaches 2.3 billion euros.
This impact is also reflected in the wider economy. The study estimates that luxury tourism represents 7.75% of production, 7.14% of added value and 7.35% of employment in the Balearic Islands. These figures show the strategic relevance of attracting a visitor profile based on quality rather than volume.
Higher spending and greater territorial value
One of the most relevant indicators is the average daily expenditure. The study estimates that the luxury tourist spends around 731 euros per day. This figure is significantly above the average daily expenditure of foreign card users.
For this reason, luxury tourism has a strong capacity to generate value across the island. Its impact goes beyond accommodation. It also supports local suppliers, gastronomy, cultural heritage, transport, craftsmanship, wellness, events and premium services.
In this sense, luxury tourism can strengthen the local business ecosystem. It can also help position Mallorca as a destination based on excellence, authenticity and identity.
Circular economy and sustainable tourism
The study also highlights the role of circular economy in the future of tourism. In the hotel sector, higher category establishments tend to adopt more circular and environmental measures. Meanwhile, independent hotels show greater proactivity in energy efficiency. Hotel chains, on the other hand, stand out for their approach to waste management.
Moreover, the study shows that sustainability becomes more effective when it is visible and credible. Clear information about green practices can increase the traveller’s willingness to pay. It can also reduce price sensitivity, especially when sustainability is connected to the guest experience.
This is particularly important for luxury tourism. Today’s high value traveller expects comfort and exclusivity. However, they also seek coherence, authenticity and a positive impact on the destination.
A more conscious model of tourism for Mallorca
For Essentially Mallorca, these findings reinforce a clear vision. Luxury can become a driver of value when it is connected to the territory, the people and the local economy.
Therefore, luxury tourism should not be understood only as a premium segment. It should also be seen as an opportunity to protect the essence of Mallorca, promote local product and generate quality employment.
The presentation also highlighted the need to continue building a more balanced tourism model. Success should not be measured only by the number of visitors. Instead, it should be measured by the quality of their contribution and by the value that remains on the island.
Where true luxury is to belong
From Essentially Mallorca, we continue to support initiatives that promote a more conscious, regenerative and authentic destination. Mallorca has the opportunity to lead a model of luxury tourism based on quality, culture and territorial respect.
Ultimately, true luxury is not only about exclusivity. It is about caring for the island, valuing its people and sharing the essence of Mallorca with the world.
